John Olsen – Board of Finance


John Olsen is an active member of the Clinton community, having served on numerous commissions including the Harbor, Fair Rent, Charter Revision and Shellfish Commissions. As an incumbent serving on the Clinton Board of Finance, he is seeking reelection.

He joined the Democratic Town Committee in Clinton in 1996 and was recently elected Vice Chair. He has participated in political campaigns from the local to national level, and was one of two members representing Connecticut on the Democratic National Committee, serving since 1996.

A plumber by trade, John joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters union 48 years ago. He is the former President and Business Manager of the United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters and Steamfitters, Local 133, and a former Secretary-Treasurer of the Connecticut State Building and Construction Trades Council.

With close to 50 years of political activism and volunteerism, John served as Chairman of the state Democratic Party from 2001 to 2002, as a member of the Democratic State Central Committee from 1982 to 1995, as Co-Chair of the State Central Platform Committee, and the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee from 1978 – 1993 with one term as Chair and one as Treasurer.

President Emeritus of the Connecticut AFL-CIO that represents 220,000 union members in the state, John is the longest serving president of the federation, having been elected in 1988 and retired from that office in 2013.

John also served as labor’s representative on numerous boards and commissions including , the Connecticut Employment and Training Commission, the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, the national board of the Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation, the Thomas Commission to Study State Government, the Study of the L’Ambiance Plaza Disaster, the Study of the Kleen Energy explosion in Middletown and theAFL-CIO Advisory Board for State Federations and Labor Councils. He was the longest serving president of the John J. Driscoll United Labor Agency. He is the longest serving member on the Board of Directors for Connecticut Innovations Inc. and helped launch and served as a member of the Connecticut Green Bank.

He works as a Development Coordinator for the Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporations, which builds and operates housing for low income seniors.

Married to Janeen Nolan Olsen, the couple has three children and three grandchildren.
